Asian inspired, this striking necklace is done in sterling silver and Niello and is referred to as Siam Sterling or Siam Silver jewelry. Made up of seven pierced and decorated fan panels featuring Ramasoon and Mekhala. Between each panel is a polished Niello button and then the necklace is finished off with diamond shaped Niello jump rings.
This particular piece is stamped and pierced sterling and then filled by hand with Niello and then final added decoration is also done by hand. Although dating can be a bit tricky, this piece was made in the mid to late 1960s.
17" long (this can be lengthened by purchasing a necklace extender)
Each fan is 1 3/8" but just under 1"
Excellent. No apparent scratches to the Niello. Clasp in excellent working order. All Niello buttons accounted for
Siam Sterling jewelry has a rich history. This Niello marvel was first made in Siam (now known as Thailand) in the late1920s. Although Niello work is done in other parts of the world, the particular designs were uniquely their own.
Thailand is a country whose national story is known as the Ramakien. A version of the Ramayana from India and specifically changed to reflect Thai values and beliefs. Part of the Ramakien is the story of Rama and Sita....it is their love story; a story of good versus evil. The niello jewelry often reflects characters from that story.
The other characters often portrayed are Mekhala and Ramasoon. The Goddess of Lightning and the God of Thunder. Read their story here.
