Hand engraved Siam Sterling Silver and Niello brooch. The black and silver set each other off nicely.
This brooch has Mekhala, the Goddess of Lightning and Ramasoon, the God of Thunder. It is from a children's story told in Thailand that explains lightning and thunder.

Excellent. No chips to the Niello. Pinback in very good condition with an ever so slight bend to the pin.
The history of Siam Sterling or Siam Silver is rather fascinating. Although Niello work has been done for hundreds of years, it seemed to come to Thailand in the 20s. The characters they use are Mekhala and Ramasoon from the child's tale as well as characters from the Ramakien, a folklore type of history that is still celebrated today.
Although still made today, there are few that know the secrets and have the skill to produce Niello and sterling jewelry. There may be one small company that makes Niello jewelry. All the major players are either out of business or they no longer produce jewelry. The glory years of Siam Sterling jewelry were in the 50's and early 60s.
